Q: Its a long long long story, but it seems that 2 people at the bottom of the chain have failed to hand over their deposits. Both are cash buyers and have both said the past 3 weeks that they would be turning in the money tomorrow, then tomorrow never comes. The broker kept ringing me (on the edge of harassment) told me that I was reckless as I said I would sell and move chain free = n. I am moved 3 weeks ago.

Keep arguing then my dear, you only pay them on completion. If completion doesn't happen then that's life. You're entitled to pull out, it's still your house.
As you're not relocating now, why not keep your house and save yourself lots of money and aggro? Granted you'll have a solicitors bill to pay but it won't be anywhere near what it will cost you when you get further down the line. Remember also that as house prices have increased where you are, you'll have to take out an even bigger mortgage to get whatever property you want.
I think I'd be pulling out as a matter of principle tbh, just to spite the agent for being so obsessive and manipulative liars
