Q:We're in the middle of doing up our house and the hassle and stress are so bad that both OH and I have to steel ourselves daily to simply not walk out.
It's a long story but it's being going on for over a year and we dont have a room we can just sit in and relax anymore. Every room has stuff in every corner as we have to move furniture and other things from whatever room we're working in.
Anyway, I have just spent today ripping up our dining room floor and laying a new one. My OH tripped over something in the hall, spent ages looking for his car keys and then knocked over a vase whilst trying to reach into a drawer. He shouted at the eldest, ignored the youngest and glared at me before marching out. We constantly have to move stuff to sit down or make tea etc and today was the straw that broke the camel's back iyswim. Because it was the floor I was working on, obviously a whole roomful of stuff had to be moved.
There's still so much to do that there isn't really an end in sight but if I had a house that was just a work site instead of a home for 2 weeks, I think I could break the back of it.
The estate agents who deal with rentals laughed at me and some of the places I saw on the net either wont accept pets (we have a dog) or they want silly money for just 2 weeks.
Any ideas? I even though about a caravan but the parks near us dont open until end March. I suspect we'll have to stay put but thought I'd post in case someone has a brainwave.
My next post may well be on the Relationship/Families board looking for advoce as a single parent at this rate!
Good idea about the actors thing, although the theatre here is surrounded by B&B's and I suspect they would probably stay there on reduced rates. I have a vague memory of one of the B&B's displaying the actor's photos.
I did consider self storage and it may end up still being a consideration, but our family is pretty diverse (how's that for tact? ) and we all live very different lives within our family so we'd have a hard time sorting what stuff was necessary and what could go. I'm already stressed again at the thought of it, lol. (Would it be very wrong to hire one of those big metal containers and put the family AND their stuff in it? I could visit them daily with food?
Tried the holiday let thing, as mentioned, nearby parks open end of March and anywhere else is too far away. I found a site with cottage lets but it was through an agent and the average figure was £500 a week. Too much for us I'm afraid.
We dont have a drive unfortunately. If we did…..I'd have the tent on it!
Ideally it would be good to find a website or a lettings place that had private owners who I could maybe approach and explain the situation. If they didn't have any tenants or holiday bookings they might be willing to rent to us a bit cheaper maybe.
I'll look at the gumtree site, thanks…..we're in Scotland btw..
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Edit: Just seen somewhere on the gumtree site that is 15 miles up the road from us so near enough for the youngest for school and for me to come back to the house everyday…and they say 'pets welcome'. It's listed as 'price on asking' but that might be a good thing if they aren't booked and the place is sitting empty. We're not exactly a haven for tourists round here. lol. I'd never heard of gumtree before…so thanks for that. I'll phone tomorrow and enquire.
*smiles for the first time in ages*
failing that, ask a local guest house if they have weekly rates?
Would a holiday let be possible? Have you tried looking at www.gumtree then enter your area and search for a caravan park or holiday let? What about getting an old touring caravan to park on your drive and create a 'haven' sitting room in it so you can at least escape in the evening?
Can't think of anything else at the moment but hopefully someone will be along with a brilliant idea soon!
GG
It may be cheaper to try & box as much of stuff up as possible & use a self storage place for two weeks. You will have to pack nearly everything away, but it will only be for a couple of weeks.
