Landlord forget to pay the ground rent. Can they still have questions?

Q:A friend of mine lives in a flat and has had a letter through from his landlord staying that they had forgotten to charge him any ground rent for the past 3 years and would he mind paying for it now.

Its £50 a year so he has a bill for £150 which isnt a great deal but is annoying nonetheless. Can they still ask for this amount even though its their fault that they didnt collect it the past years and is there any room for negotiation over the amount to be paid?

  • Buying the freehold on my house?

    Q:Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the site, so I hope I get it right first time!

    I have a question about buying a freehold on a property that I own….

I moved into a new house a couple of years ago and I was offered the freehold for £1,250 or ground rent of £125 per year. At the time I was skint and couldn't find the extra £1250 to buy the lease, so I opted for the ground rent instead. My neighbors on both sides bought their freeholds for the price I'v

  • Ground Rent – differs from other residents Invoices “

Q:Hey – this is my first post so please excuse any breach of forum etiquette. I bought a leasehold flat just over a year ago. It's a conversion with 150 flats in it. The whole management side has been a shambles and I currently have a LVT tribunal pending for next week. However, in the course of gathering more dirt/evidence, yesterday it came to light that I am paying more (130% more) ground rent than one particular neighbour (who, incidentally, has a much bigger property than me).

  • Ground rent and service charges

Q:Could I ask for your opinions? I am buying a one bed conversion maisonette for which there is a service charge/ maintenance fee of £600-700 p.a. and a ground rent of £300 p.a. There is a communal garden, which the current vendors garden, but I guess there is fencing and a pathway that the managing agents may maintain. Apart from that there are no communal areas. The outside of the building appears very well maintained. The vendors tell me it is quite regularly redecorated. I haven't quite

  • Chief Rent and leasehold

Q:My house is for sale and it is freehold, with chief rent of £5.00 per annum. The house across the road (same type, style, etc) is also for sale (similar price to mine) but their house is leasehold, with ground rent of £10.00 per annum.

Are there any advantages to being freehold as against leasehold (from a selling point of view) that I could use to push my house sale?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • leasehold – How far can it be back dated?

Q:Hi we have a leasehold property and have never been billed for ground rent. At the beginning of June we received 3 invoices for ground rent going back 3 years – all due date 1st January 2004, 1st January 2005 and 1st January 2006. The invoice date for all of them is 30th May 2006.

They have now sent us a "final notice prior to legal action" letter, just 6 weeks after the 1st letter. Its alot of money too, £500!

Can they back date this number of years? Can they
