View of houses – oil fired central heating [oil fired central heating] [rents]

Q: I am interested in many houses have , but seem to have an advantage?

is this better than the normal central heating mean? I paid about £ 80 per yr in electric and gas, it would be obscenely expensive oil with standard costs, rental of tanks etc?

A:its all part of living in the country! enjoy it.

A:do u have to refill yearly, or if it lasted u 4 yrs on on tank, in theory, would that be ok

If only we used that little. In theory oil will last indefinitely, so yes that would be ok.

A:we have oil watch on our tank, its just a small thing that is plugged into a socket that is linked to the tank,
it digitally displays the level of the tank, so its very easy to know when you need oil, without checking the actual tank,
and it still leaves us free to shop around for the best prices.

A:It's way less convenient than gas, but when you've woken up to a cold shower once you tend to remember to check the tank level a bit more frequently, suffice to say we've not run out since.

Many oil suppliers will install a Sentinel, which monitors the level of oil in the tank and sends an electronic message to the depot when you get low.

However, they charge for it and it limits your ability to shop around.

That reminds me … I need to order some oil

A:We are on oil and have been for about 7 years in the good old days of $20/bbl oil it was really cheap cf gas, however, it is now expensive.

If you're like me and one of those people who like to know how far you can get on your car's reserve tank it can be a bit of a rollercoaster – esp. when you think you are about to run out and and a cold snap has started – all the delivery firms suddenly start quoting dates 2 weeks hence which doesn't go down well with OH's

Having said all that oil's fine and you can feel more in control – when the tank level goes down slowly I feel very virtuous, plus I quite like phoning round the delivery co's and haggling for the best deal, very moneysaving.

A:No gas in our village either, so it's electric, oil or LPG/Calor.

Looking at the price of gas vs oil alone is not enough – you need to consider how much volume (of each) needs to be consumed to create a specific amount of heat. And the efficiency of the boiler makes a difference too, as does insulation/draught proofing.

We have a four bed detached with very bad insulation (no DG, insufficient loft insulation, no cavity walls to insulate etc) and our oil consumption for both the CH & Aga is about 3,600 litres a year.

A:I've always thought that oil was cheaper than gas – in the isle of man, it certainly is (but we wont go into that £120million shafting that some dodgy directors of the main gas supplier did to the customers before disappearing to the cayman islands..)..

Dont forget, you can always do more to insulate your home and yourself than relying on heating – modern houses developed in colder climates have very little heating at all because the materials they are made from are so good. We need to see some of that here, but first, all the traditionalists in the local planning offices need firing..

A:The previous property that I lived in had and electric appliances. I used about £600 in oil in a year and minimal amount of electric and I thought it was much cheaper than gas and electric.

I used to pay a DD for my oil and whenever the tank was getting low just phoned up the supplier and they came along and filled it for me. I paid £25pm DD for oil and i now pay double that pm for gas!

A:The newer oil fired condensing boilers are the most efficient boilers available. This doesn't necesarily mean that they are any more or less expensive of course. An oil fred boiler certainly wouldn't put me off buying a house though.

A:just wanted to add, that alot of rural properties have oil or lpg because there is no gas supply, well there isnt in our village.

A:dont be put off moving to the country because of oil or lpg, we have it and its great,
electric storage heaters are a big no no imo,
dont know if you can use recycled chip fat, but if you can i think you would need to cook a lot of chips.

A:We are thinking of moving to the country and a lot of the interesting properties have either oil or lpg central heating which is kind of putting us off. But the costs quoted in this thread don't seem to bad atm but its what it will be in the future as the oil runs out that also worries me.

Out of interest can you run off of say recycled chip fat or similar?

A:My previous house had oil central heating, and now we have gas. Both were similar re controllability etc. I preferred oil, because it is SO easy to change suppliers, bargain down prices etc, and to budget (ie buy it in the summer when cheaper). This year gas prices have been totally out of control – except those of the OP that is! I would definitely have oil again. I know you can change gas suppliers (and do) but it is such a hassle in comparison with making a few phone calls to get prices per litre, then a couple more to bargain down the prices! You buy the tank, not rent it, and ours was just over £400, a few years ago. It was plastic, and you could open it and immediately see how much was in there, rather than trying to decipher energy companies' tricksy tariffs. Much better IMHO. Sometimes gas is cheaper, sometimes oil. I suspect oil might have been for this winter, if bought in advance as I used to do.

A:We have just placed an offer on a 4 bed detatched house with oil fired heating. The current owner provided us with bills showing that approximately 2000 litres were used per year, costing about £600.

A:We are about to buy a house with oil fired CH, and I'm sure it will be more expensive than gas.

We hope eventually to put in something "greener" though…oil & gas prices are only going one way in the longer term

A:£80 per year for gas and electric… Wish I was that frugal….. I think its safe to say oil fired would be more expensive that this…..

i'll second that!

A:1000 litres of kerosene round here is about £320 delivered.

Cost of tank is about £500 (needs replacing every 10 years or so)

It is the same as gas central heating, just uses an oil burner rather than a natural gas burner (AFAIK!)

Have always combined OFCH with wood burning stoves, AGA and electric storage heaters so not a scientific survey, but I would say it is more expensive!
