We will eventually homeless? [beggining] [housing association]

Q:Basically bit of background.. we are in the process of buying a shared ownership house (we rent so no chain), the have said from the start that we will move on the 21st of Aug, this is still the case from speaking to them..BUT we have had our paperwork from the solicitors this morning, we are at the of it all and they have said around 6 weeks..
Now we told the landlord roughly 3 weeks ago we were moving etc, he asked when and we told him we were told that date..it was very casual and i wrote on a piece of paper that the date was x and that was if nothing changed..
Does he have any rights? do we? it wasn't proper notice just a small notelet saying exactly that, we have an ongoing tenancy that we have had since '04' and it hasn't ever been redone..he now has tenents ready to move in and we are really worried now..i work from home so that's the main concern..not sure what to do
Any advice please!

A:Even if he has tenants ready to move in, he shouldn't issue the contract (AST) until you move out. In theory he has accepted your notice so could go to court and evict you. In practice this is going to cost him more than it is worth. Tell him ASAP that you can't vacate at the moment and he should inform the tenants that the property is not yet available.

A:You can give landlords verbal notice to quit and they can accept this.

I suggest you write him a letter immediately informing him that the note you gave him wasn't your notice and you are leaving in approx. 8 weeks time.

Give 8 weeks because house purchases get delayed for a variety of reasons and you don't want to end up homeless.

You need to give written notice the day before your rent day of a month. see here-http://england.shelter.org.uk/advice/advice-3145.cfm#wipLive-14092-4
