What is an average house ? [detached house] [quot]

Q:The word is bandied about a lot. But what IS an average house?

What prompted me to start thinking about this was a posting I saw on another board, where somebody considered a 4/5 bed, 2-garage, in a good area to be an average house …. now, I disagree.

My understanding of an &;average house&; has always been a 3-bed semi, probably with a garage. Nothing flash. Sufficient. An everyday bog standard semi.

I'd say 4-5 bedroomed houses were what &;posher people&; had, so not average. They'd be &;we did well, we earn well, look what we got in our 40s&; type of houses. The likes of bank managers and similar &;professionals&; would have lived in them.

What do YOU think of when you see the term &;average house&;?

A:I'd think of an average house as being a Victorian to 1960s 3 bed semi.

A:Its different all over. I live in a small 1 bed flat in london. I think a lot of people have small flats in cities. I could a 4-6 bed up north for the price of my one bed. I would agree that the average house probably has more than 2 bedrooms, which (it has just dawned on me) means I live in something very less than average. Doh!

p.s if transporting cattle is considered less than average for travel purposes,
I wonder what the tube qualifies as!

A:&;30% Overpriced&;

Next question.

A:You'll probably find that most people think of something like the house they grow up in as 'average'. Having seen more of the country and experienced having to pay for my own accomodation and I now know this not to be the case.

When I was young I thought a 5 bedroom with a big garden and garage was 'average' as that's all there really was where we lived, and so many of my friend's had much bigger, fancier houses so ours seemed quite humble! Nowadays I would say an 'average' hosue is a 2up, 2down terrace.

A:I've always considered it to be a 2-up, 2-down terrace. But probably because that's by far the most common type of house where I grew up. And they cost over £200k there too.

A:I'm going 3-bed semi with no garage. But then I think most people believe their own background is 'average' and thus use where they grew up as the average. I always thought average people went to bed about 2 in the morning, until I realised my parent's were freaks and that was really late!

A:Half way between a bad house and a good house? OK – I give up – What is it?

A:3-bed semi in a suburb.

A:I think that when the media use the term &;average house price&; they are referring to the average price of a house not the price of an average house.
