Q:I know the Uk has turned into a 'Big Brother' nightmare where personal freedom is not respected unless you are a criminal but why do I have to provide a copy of my passport to an Estate agent before they will market my home ?
Am i alone in thinking this is an infringement of my basic liberty to sell my property (not buying again) with privacy. What about the security issue of any old Joe Bloggs working for an Estage Agent having full access to a copy of my passport.
Do I have to do this bt Law and if so what Law and when passed and how can it be objected against.
What about civil liberties for an innocent person just wanting to sell their home – I don't recall being asked for confirmation of ID when I paid Stamp duty buying the house or Council tax, so why should I provide it now ?
Sorry guy couldn't help tampering with your words but thought this would sum up, in another way, how you may feel.
If you put an offer in on a house the cert will be withdrawn…

Plenty of light reading matter on the issue of anti-money laundering regs for you here: http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/documents/financial_services/money/fin_crime_policy.cfm
You can always raise objection via your MP if you want to sound off: whether you'll get any response other than a standard " thank you for your letter" is another matter.
I had to produce my passport to my conveyancing solicitor despite him having personally known me for almost 20 years.
I have recently found out I was not being checked for large sum transfers I should have been, it took less than half an hour to sort it out and has not yet impacted on my civil liberties.
