Would you buy a house, no DSL available? [buying a house] [satelite]

Q:Hi there,

I was just wondering about this today and how peoples requirements change when they are buying property.

For myself I couldn't see myself no matter how good it is, if there was no possibility of having broadband access (if no dsl then it would definately have to be capable of getting the high speed by )

Does anyone else feel the same way as me-if you can't get dsl in your new home then its a big no no!!

A:I wouldn't care, in fact I would regard it as a personal challenge to get broadband working somehow, a new hobby playing with satellite dishes and power cables.

A:When we bought our home, the vendors didn't have any internet access at all, but assured us that their neighbours did have. Before we had exchanged we decided to go to BT's site to see what speed we'd get, and that told us we couldn't get Broadband at all! This came as a real shock and we seriously had to consider whether to continue as OH is a software engineer and often works remotely at home. Lucikly we decided to go ahead with the purchase as it would give OH an excuse not to work at weekends/evenings with his Boss (!) but when we moved in and asked Orange to reconnect us, it went through without a hitch and within days. Why BT thinks we can't get a connection is a mystery!

A:I'd miss it, but saying you can't run your life without seems a bit excessive. I remember having a fairly decent life 5 years ago, before I got BB connected

A:It is clear that internet access is no longer a luxury. I could not run my life without it, and would look for a price reduction where DSL was not possible. Hopefully this price reduction would cover the cost of more expensive connection charges for satellite etc.

A:How did people live without broadband? Maybe they had conversations with each other in the evening
Only joking.

I have just moved into temporary accomodation which doesn't have any internet access, and I too was a very heavy user, it took a bit of getting use to but now I know I spend more quality(!) time with my partner and we spend more time cooking and just chilling with each other in the evening which I love.

So would I buy a house without DSL access? Yes, but then I have access to email and web during the day at work so I am not completely cut-off!

A:We are only on dial-up.. We can't get broadband here (other than half a meg of what Telefonica call ADSL Rural and charge 40 euros a month for. We pay £22E for dial-up!).

So my answer to the original post is YES.

A:Three are currently offering 4Gb (about that) worth of broadband for £15 per month. It's just a simple dongle with a sim modem.
I bought my house then checked for the broadband – Phew!

Funny you should ask.. We recently moved into a house were I knew I couldnt get ADSL – and I was a "heavy user" of internet, too heavy some would say..

Anyway, we really loved the house and I said early on that I could live without internet if it meant getting the right house.. The main reason was that even though you cant get internet now, you'll be surprised how technology improves. I am glad we bought the house because BT has since built a new exchange just around the corner, so we should soon have broadband – RESULT!

We got our fab house, and we soon get broadband..

So, I wouldnt let internet rule my life.. If you find the right house, go for it!

(connected using 28.8 modem (all my lines allows). )
